[USA] The Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship Program

Horatio Alger Military Veterans will channel scholarship for achievement student and indigent. The applications will be accepted from November 1, 2006 through March 1, 2007. Please review the eligibility requirements below to confirm that you are eligible. If you wish to apply for a general Horatio Alger Scholarship, please visit our page.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible applicants to the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship must prove/demonstrate:

  1. Service under the United States Military in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or Operation Iraqi Freedom beginning September 11, 2001 or later
  2. Honorable service record under the United States Military
  3. Critical financial need
  4. Intention to pursue a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) at an accredited college or university in the United States (awardees may begin their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)
  5. No more than 60 cumulative semester/credit hours by the end of the current term. (Please send transcript after receiving grades for the current term).
  6. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
  7. Integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
  8. U.S. citizenship or be in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: Complete an online application by March 1, 2007. Please create your application with an e-mail address that you regularly use. The Association will only contact you by e-mail (if necessary). Please add military@horatioalger.org to your address book so that e-mails will not be blocked.

New Applicants | Returning Applicants

STEP 2: Mail all required documents in one envelope to the Horatio Alger Association by March 1, 2007. Materials postmarked after March 1 will be ineligible for the current round. Packages with missing documents will not be eligible. Please do not staple documents. Please do not send original documents. Ensure that photocopies are clear and that your name has not been cut off.

Required Documents

1. College Transcript

Applicants who are or have been enrolled in college should order an official, sealed transcript from their current or most recently attended college or university where degree-applicable credits were being earned. Please allow enough time for your school to process your transcript request and deliver the transcript to you. Your sealed transcript should be sent in the same envelope with your other required documents. (Please note that unofficial transcripts, degree audits, and advising worksheets will not be accepted).

OR

Applicants currently enrolled in their first semester/quarter of college should send proof of enrollment in place of a transcript.

OR
Applicants who have never been enrolled in college and have no transcript should submit a brief letter stating this.

2. Tax Return—Applicants should submit a photocopy of the front page of their 2005 income tax return.

OR

2004 W-2 Form(s) if you did not file taxes due to a Combat Zone Exemption, or your level of income was less that $7,950 (single) or $15,900 (married)

3. Proof of service in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or Operation Iraqi Freedom—Applicants must prove service in OEF in Afghanistan or OIF by submitting official military documentation which explicitly states these operations and locations. Please use a highlighter pen to mark the areas of your documents verifying this. Please send the document which pertains to your current military status below.

* Active Duty Personnel: Please send an official military document explicitly stating that you served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or Operation Iraqi Freedom.
