With the high fee for college entrance, many students may not be able to continue their study. Although there are possibilities for student to enter the university or college by receiving the scholarship, the competition to get this chance is really harsh. The students may need to take more effort and have more skills to increase their quality to win this competition.

Take merit scholarships for example. This scholarship has been begun in 1955 and the students who get attracted with this scholarship are not a few. There are many of them. The requirements for this scholarship seem easy to fulfil, which are the students must be in their last year of high school, citizens of United States, and take the preliminary SAT in their specified year of high school, the applicants are too many. But, the number of the applicants is really enormous. There are almost 1.5 million students per year who apply for this scholarship, but there are only some of them who can be the finalist and become the winner. Moreover, they also need to take the tests which need to be done over and over.

This high competition in getting the scholarship may make the students study and work harder to accomplish their dream in joining a college. But, there are some students who feel depressed after they fail in winning over the competition. This condition can lead to degradation in the society which may lead to more crimes.
