As a PhD student, you will work on the project called ‘Validation of an eye tracking instrument in individuals with mild to borderline intellectual disability and alcohol and/or drug dependency’. The aim is to develop and validate an eye tracking instrument that will be used in (young) adults with mild to borderline intellectual disability (ID) and alcohol and/or (soft)drugs dependency.

It has been shown that non-disabled people who abuse alcohol and/or drugs show an attentional bias (as assessed by implicit measures) towards cues associated with these substances. Whether people with mild ID show a similar attentional bias towards substance related cues is still unknown. The aim is to add eye tracking methodology to ongoing clinical diagnosis, risk assessment and treatment evaluation of clients admitted to the clinical treatment programme.

As part of the project, you will study the eye tracking methodology at the BSI, the literature on attentional bias for substances, and the literature on the characteristics and treatment of (young) adults with mild ID. You will work with these (young) adults. This will result in a PhD thesis, including papers published in top scientific journals.

The research will be conducted at the Behavioural Science Institute under supervision of Prof. Robert Didden and Prof. Rutger Engels. The project group consists of Dr Klaus Drieschner (senior researcher at Trajectum), Maria Trentelman PhD (leader of the substance abuse/dependency treatment programme at Trajectum) and Joanneke van der Nagel PhD (psychiatrist at the Tactus addiction centre and PhD student at NISPA, Nijmegen).

Requirements The primary data collection centre is Trajectum Hoeve Boschoord at Boschoord (near Wolvega).

Organization The research is conducted in collaboration with Trajectum, a centre which provides integrated and specialized inpatient treatment for clients with mild to borderline ID and severe behavioural and/or psychiatric disorders. Clients have an IQ between 50 and 85 and deficits in adaptive and social-emotional skills.

The clients display alcohol and/or (soft) drugs abuse and many have substance dependency (e.g. craving). A substantial number of clients have been admitted to the facility because they committed an offence (in most cases, under the influence of a substance).

Most of the study will be conducted at Trajectum Hoeve Boschoord (see www.trajectum.info), but data will also be collected at other treatment centres for individuals with mild ID and substance-related problems (in the northern and eastern parts of the Netherlands).

The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the largest faculties at Radboud University Nijmegen. The faculty currently employs about 650 employees. The faculty`s ambition is to become one of the top social science institutes in Europe, providing high-quality research programmes and study programmes that rank among the best in the Netherlands.

Website: http://www.ru.nl/fsw

Conditions of employment Additional conditions of employment Additional Information Application As a PhD student, you will work on the project called ‘Validation of an eye tracking instrument in individuals with mild to borderline intellectual disability and alcohol and/or drug dependency’.

[29,5
997

The project will be embedded in the Developmental Psychopathology research group of the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Radboud University Nijmegen. The BSI is a research institute where highly qualified researchers conduct quantitative studies on the fundamental principles and processes that govern human behaviour. The BSI`s research programme integrates approaches from both psychology and education, and focuses on technology-enhanced analysis of behaviour.
