Job description<\/strong><\/p>\n The numerical simulation of multi-fluid flows, such as droplets in air, presents many interesting and challenging mathematical problems. In particular, the accurate and efficient computation of the interface and its instabilities and the merging and breakup of different flow regions require the development and application of advanced numerical techniques. The aim of the current Ph.D. project is to develop a novel level set and cut cell discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for multi-fluid flows. This algorithm should be well suited to describe the fundamental processes occurring at the interface between the different fluids. In order to capture these phenomena, special attention will be given to the development of hp-solution adaptive discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations. The main application in this project will be the simulation of the behavior of droplets produced by the printer head of an inkjet printer. The research will also include the implementation of the new finite element algorithms in our C++ based finite element toolkit hpGEM and will be conducted in close collaboration with physicists and mathematicians working in related projects. As a PhD candidate you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of four years, at the end of which you must have completed your PhD thesis. The gross monthly salary for a PhD increases from 2042 in the first year to 2612 in the final year (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). A solid background in finite element methods and interest in (computational) fluid dynamics is important. You have significant experience in mathematical analysis and numerical modeling and with the implementation of numerical discretizations for partial differential equations in computer programs. You work accurately and independently, are creative, a team player and have excellent communication skills, particularly in written and spoken English.
